Vikings Release Adam Thielen After He ‘Requested to Leave’

On December 1, 2025, the Minnesota Vikings officially released veteran receiver Adam Thielen — the rugged pass-catcher asked for his release in pursuit of more playing time during what he indicated would be his final NFL season.

Following Sunday’s lopsided 26–0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, in which Thielen was listed as a healthy scratch, his camp formally requested the release. The Vikings granted that request after discussions over the weekend. In a statement, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah acknowledged Thielen’s long service and said the decision was made out of respect for the veteran wideout’s wish to seek a more significant role elsewhere.

Thielen took to social media shortly afterward to address his departure: “As a Minnesota native, putting on this uniform over the years … has always meant that much more to me. This team is in my bones, it’s in my heart and it’s part of my DNA. I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking.”

At age 35, Thielen’s 2025 reunion with Minnesota had been billed as a homecoming. The Vikings acquired him in August via trade from the Carolina Panthers, giving up draft picks in hopes of bolstering their receiving corps amid injuries and suspensions.

But the reunion failed to spark. In 11 games this season, Thielen logged just 8 catches on 18 targets for 69 yards and no touchdowns. His volume dropped sharply compared to prior seasons, and the Vikings’ offense never found a rhythm — a major reason Thielen opted to seek his release now.

This move marks a bittersweet chapter. Thielen remains one of the most decorated receivers in Vikings history and a fan favorite. His earlier tenure featured multiple 1,000-yard seasons, two Pro Bowl selections, and a reputation as a clutch performer.

Now, as the Vikings clear the path, Thielen enters the waiver wire — free to sign with any team likely contending for the postseason. For many analysts and fans, how his final few weeks play out will define the closing chapter of a storied career.
