Eagles to Rest Jalen Hurts in Week 18 Finale to Prioritize Postseason Readiness

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles have finalized their quarterback plans for the final week of the regular season, announcing that starter Jalen Hurts will be held out of Sunday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The decision, confirmed by head coach Nick Sirianni on Wednesday, ensures that the franchise cornerstone will have a full two weeks of rest before the team begins its playoff campaign.

The move follows a season in which Hurts has managed various lower-body ailments while leading the Eagles to a 12-4 record. With Philadelphia’s seed in the NFC playoff bracket already determined, the organization has opted for a cautious approach rather than risking their starting signal-caller in a game with no bearing on the standings.

“Jalen has played through a lot this year and has shown incredible toughness,” Sirianni said during his Wednesday press conference. “But looking at the big picture and where we want to go in the postseason, we feel the best decision for the team and for Jalen is to give him this time to get back to 100 percent.”

In his absence, veteran backup Kenny Pickett is expected to receive the start at Lincoln Financial Field. Pickett, who was acquired via trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers in the offseason, has seen limited action in relief roles this year. The Week 18 start provides Pickett with a significant opportunity to command the first-team offense and stay sharp should he be called upon during the tournament.

The decision to rest starters extends beyond the quarterback position. Several other key contributors dealing with minor injuries—including wide receiver A.J. Brown and offensive tackle Lane Johnson—are expected to see reduced snap counts or be made inactive for the contest.

Hurts finishes the 2025 regular season with over 3,800 passing units and 12 rushing touchdowns, further cementing his status as one of the league’s premier dual-threat threats. While the “massive decision” prevents him from adding to those totals on Sunday, the focus in Philadelphia has shifted entirely toward a deep January run.

The Eagles will use the week to evaluate younger talent and depth pieces on the roster, while Hurts continues a personalized recovery program overseen by the team’s medical staff.
