NFL and Patriots Issue Official Statements After Stefon Diggs Charged with Felony Strangulation

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The NFL and the New England Patriots have officially responded to the shocking criminal charges filed against star wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Following reports that the 32-year-old is facing felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault charges, both the league office and the franchise released statements on Tuesday addressing the legal situation that has sent ripples through the sports world on the eve of the playoffs.

The charges stem from an alleged December 2 incident at Diggs’ home in Dedham, involving a former private chef. According to court documents, the accuser alleges that a dispute over back pay escalated into a physical altercation in which Diggs “smacked her across the face” and “tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow.”

The NFL’s Statement The league office, which typically remains tight-lipped during the early stages of legal proceedings, confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely. “We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” the NFL said in a brief statement. “We have no further comment at this time.” Under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, the NFL has the power to place players on the Commissioner’s Exempt List (paid leave) if they are charged with a felony involving violence, which could jeopardize Diggs’ availability for the Patriots’ postseason.

The Patriots’ Statement The New England Patriots, who recently clinched the AFC East title, expressed a stance of support for their leading receiver while acknowledging the severity of the claims.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs,” the team stated. “Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

Defense and Arraignment Diggs’ attorney, David Meier, also released a forceful denial, labeling the allegations “unsubstantiated and uncorroborated.” Meier claimed the charges are the “direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute” and stated that Diggs looks forward to clearing his name in court.

An arraignment has been scheduled for January 23, 2026—just two days before the AFC Championship Game. While Diggs’ legal team is reportedly attempting to push the hearing to March to avoid a conflict with the NFL schedule, the looming legal battle has cast a significant shadow over a Patriots team currently chasing a Super Bowl berth.
