In a significant roster shake-up, the Pittsburgh Steelers have claimed veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers, while releasing cornerback Darius Slay — moves that reshape both their offense and defense as the season approaches its final stretch.
Thielen, 35, was waived by the Minnesota Vikings after requesting a release, citing a desire for more playing time in what he has said will be his final NFL season. With just eight catches for 69 yards in 11 games this season, Thielen’s role had dwindled amid a crowded receiving corps in Minnesota.
Now with Pittsburgh, he arrives in a passing offense struggling for consistency. The Steelers have been searching for a reliable complement to their top receiver, and Thielen’s experience and veteran presence could provide the depth and leadership they’ve been missing.
On the defensive side, Slay’s release marks the end of a brief stint with Pittsburgh. The 34-year-old cornerback signed earlier this year in hopes of beefing up the secondary but found himself benched for recent games. The team also promoted younger cornerbacks — including Asante Samuel Jr. — from the practice squad to help fill the vacancy.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the moves, calling them part of a “re-shaping” effort ahead of a key stretch of games. He said the team valued Thielen’s veteran leadership and felt the defensive backfield needed a refresh.
For Thielen, this marks a new chapter — perhaps the final one in his NFL journey — offering one more shot at meaningful playing time. For Pittsburgh, it’s a gamble that may pay off if the veteran receiver can re‐ignite a stagnant passing game. Meanwhile, Slay becomes a free agent again, with his next destination still uncertain.
